Do’s and Don’ts for Designers Applying for a Job
1. Do include your portfolio. You are not applying for an administrative position so a simple word document wouldn’t impress anyone. Even editors submit really fancy resumes to show their visual capabilities nowadays, much less a designer! Why would I waste my time calling a designer without a portfolio for an interview?
2. Do not showcase your work with 80 attachments. It is irritating and annoying for your prospective employers. Organize your works in a single pdf instead. Come on, you are a designer! If you can’t present your works coherently, who can?
Rule of thumb – there should not be more than three attachments in your email.
3. Don’t tell your prospective employers about your years of experience if you haven’t cleared points 1 and 2. NPNT.
4. Do get someone to proofread your resume. Do get rid of stylistic inconsistencies.
5. Uh, do not tell me how much you need the job in the subject header. I sympathize, but it looks unprofessional.
